Acid / Alkaline Food & Crohn's disease.
What does the term ‘balanced diet’ mean in regard to healing from Crohn’s disease and then maintaining the well being of our bodies? Our Western diet commonly involves a significant imbalance that is hidden from the eyes of most consumers. This imbalance is our excessive consumption of foods and fluids that leave an acidic residue in our bodies. Acidic substances moving through delicate digestive tissues? What is the likely impact of that and could Crohn’s disease eventually be one of the outcomes?
About this book
‘In the last few years, researchers around the world have increasingly reported the importance of acid-alkaline balance. A perennial bestseller, THE ACID-ALKALINE FOOD GUIDE was designed as an easy-to-follow guide to the most common foods that influence your body’s pH level. This second edition has been expanded to include dozens of additional foods. Updated information, also, explores (and refutes) the myths about pH balance and diet and guides the reader to supplements that can help the body achieve a healthy pH level.
THE ACID-ALKALINE FOOD GUIDE begins by explaining how the acid-alkaline environment of the body is influenced by foods. It then presents a list of thousands of foods and their acid-alkaline effects. Included are not only single foods, such as fruits and vegetables, but, also, popular combination and even fast foods, like burgers and fries. In each case, you’ll not only discover whether a food is acidifying or alkalising, but, also, learn the degree to which that food affects the body. Informative insets guide you in choosing the food that’s right for you. The first book of its kind-now updated and expanded-
THE ACID-ALKALINE FOOD GUIDE will quickly become the resource you turn to at home, in restaurants and whenever you want to select a food that can help you reach your health and dietary goals.’
Comment
This was one of the absolutely essential books on my journey to recovery. Whilst Grain Brain and Fast Tract Digestion IBS had helped me to understand and remove the carbohydrate based foods that were causing high levels of inflammation in my body, it was this book that explained the importance of balancing the pH of our bodies. In particular it offered an explanation for how the MAP parasite may have caused my Crohn’s disease: ‘…acid-alkaline imbalances make it possible for infectious agents to thrive and reproduce inside the body…’ (P29). The book covers inflammation in detail and explains that ‘Another serious consequence of acidosis is inflammation….’ and ‘If inflammation persists, it can lead to a variety of disease conditions, including …colitis…‘ (P31) As you are probably aware colitis is closely associated with Crohn’s disease.
What is particularly helpful is the A-Z listing showing most foods by their relative alkaline / acid residual properties. If you walk round the supermarket not sure the foods that could help you and your loved ones this is the book to buy. I quite literally used to take it to the supermarket so as not to wander round gormlessly (I became very good at that) looking at the rows of products and not knowing whether they would cause more pain and discomfort the following day.
In short – this book is highly recommended not only for understanding how disease can occur in the body but for providing a practical ‘shopping list’ that may give you back your confidence in looking after your body with appropriate food choices. Alongside The pH Miracle it was this book that helped me understand what fuel sources my body needed for its optimal function. I was finally able to work with my body and stop giving it foods and fluids that prevented it from self-healing.
