Healing Crohn's with specific carbohydrates.
Consuming certain types of carbohydrate can be extremely damaging to our bowels. ‘Breaking the vicious cycle’ is an excellent resource that explains in detail how the bowel works and the carbohydrates that can have an inflammatory effect on them. It then goes into further detail by recommending a dietary protocol called the ‘Specific Carbohydrate Diet’ that includes only selected carbohydrates.
‘Breaking the Vicious Cycle” by Elaine Gottschall is a paperback book that offers a diet plan for improving intestinal health for those suffering from Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, chronic diarrhea, and other related conditions. The book provides recipes and food recommendations that are designed to alleviate symptoms and promote healing. Written in English, this informative book is published by The Kirkton Press and is a valuable resource for those seeking natural treatments and medicine for their health concerns. With a focus on health and wellness, “Breaking the Vicious Cycle” is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their intestinal health and overall well-being.’
The book has been so successful that there is now a ‘Specific Carbohydrate Diet Association’. They have an excellent website offering a wealth of resources including clinicians, videos and access to local communities.

After reading Self-healing Crohn’s and Colitis I was looking for a book that provided more details about how the bowel works and the impact of consuming carbohydrates as I knew my symptoms flared up when I ate them. Breaking the Vicious Cycle covered both of these topics comprehensively and reaffirmed how we can take responsibility for our own healing through dietary choices. The explanation of how the bowel works is very good and helped me understand how to reduce my immediate symptoms.
I needed to research wider for my particular symptoms though and that research led me to the understanding the importance of the acid-alkaline balance as detailed in several posts on this site. Carbohydrates, in my experience, most definitely leave an acidic residue in the bowel and contribute to Crohn’s disease, but so do other food types hence through this excellent book I took the first few steps towards healing.
