Parasites

Parasites and their relationship with Crohn's disease

Parasites and Crohn's disease.

It is somewhat disconcerting to learn we all have parasites in our bodies and if their numbers get out of control we can experience a variety of debilitating health issues and periods of illness. This is especially true of Crohn’s disease where a bacterium called Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is found in the bodies of over 90% of those with the disease.

What can be even more distressing is to learn that this bacterium ‘belongs to a family of bacteria called ‘Mycobacteria’, which also includes Tuberculosis and Leprosy.Source. Maybe now it makes more sense why Crohn’s disease can be so difficult to overcome?

But all is not lost. There are a variety of methods by which the bacterium can be removed.  I’ll cover two of those methods (The Beck’s Protocol and Chlorine Dioxide) in separate posts, but for now we’ll take a brief look at anti-biotic therapy.

The treatment was pioneered by Prof. John Hermon-Taylor (sadly now deceased) and is a combination therapy including Rifabutin, Clarithromycin and often a third agent, Clofazimine. To read more about the treatment click here to locate the relevant page and scroll to the bottom where you’ll find an ‘AMAT Patient Info Leaflet’ pdf. In case it disappears you can download the pdf below or read the document in the pdf viewer provided.

There are many options for dealing with parasites including MAP that do not require antibiotic use;

  • The Becks Protocol uses four components including low electric currents, ozonated water and silver colloid to remove parasites from the body.
  • CDS (Chlorine Dioxide Solution) clears parasites using Chlorine Dioxide gas dissolved in water.
  • Wormwood is a herbal remedy that not only clears parasites but has also been found to be beneficial for treating Crohn’s disease specifically. In a double blind study carried out in Germany; “Researchers found that there was a steady improvement in Crohn’s disease symptoms in 18 patients (90 percent) who received wormwood in spite of the decrease of steroids. After eight weeks of treatment with wormwood, there was almost complete remission of symptoms in 13 (65 percent) patients in this group as compared to none in the placebo group. “

I used both The Becks Protocol and CDS during my recovery. More recently I have also used Wormwood and, from my experience, it certainly clears parasites from the body. It is very easy to take, if you wish to contact a reputable herbalist to find out more please see the Herbal Medicine blog.
